Forgent is a patent litigation company that holds about 40 patents on basic communication functionalities and has been enforcing them aggressively. The most well-known case is the patent on run-length coding used in the JPEG standard, for which Forgent is said to have collected 50 mn usd from diverse companies, including large ones such as Sony and Adobe.
Forgent may have started as a software company and does seem to still have a minor software business.
