Synopsis

EICTA sent out a letter to all members of the Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, reiterating unsubstantiated and long-refuted statements on how important software patents are and how the Council's position is not about software but about "computer-implemented inventions" which are related to mobile phones and washing machines. As usual, the central and only argument of EICTA's letter consists in the weight of the companies and associations who allegedly support EICTA's position. However there is also serious doubt as to whether these companies and associations actually stand behind the letter. Several of the cited companies and associations have publicly expressed opposition against software patents and support for the Parliament's rather than the Council's position.
